Matsuri Hino is a Japanese manga artist who began her professional career in the mid-1990s, publishing in shojo manga magazines and developing the gothic romantic aesthetic that would define her most significant work. Her early series — MeruPuri, Wanted!, and others — established her visual style: intricate, detailed character art, elaborate costume design, and a gift for constructing romantic tension in ornate fantasy settings. They also demonstrated her abiding interest in the collision of supernatural elements with romantic feeling.
Vampire Knight, which ran in LaLa magazine from 2004 to 2013, is her major work and one of the defining shojo manga of its decade. Set at Cross Academy, a prestigious school operating a secret arrangement: its Day Class is composed of human students who attend in the morning; its Night Class — impossibly beautiful, invariably dressed in white uniforms — is composed of vampires who attend in the evening. Yuki Cross, the school's guardian alongside her childhood friend Zero, is responsible for maintaining the secret and managing the relationship between the two populations. She is also the object of attention from Kaname Kuran, the Night Class's aristocratic leader, whose history with her is far more complicated than it initially appears.
Hino's achievement with Vampire Knight lies in the complexity of the love triangle she constructs and sustains across nineteen volumes. Both Kaname and Zero are given genuine psychological depth and contradictory qualities — neither is simply a villain, neither is simply a hero — and Yuki's relationship to each of them evolves in ways that resist easy resolution. The vampire mythology Hino builds is internally consistent and significantly darker than the genre's lighter takes on the material; questions of feeding, of the cost of immortality, and of what vampires have sacrificed to exist are pursued with genuine seriousness.
The anime adaptation — two series, 2008 and 2008–09 — reached the limits of the manga's then-completed material and diverged in ways that frustrated some readers, but the animated versions of Hino's character designs were widely appreciated for their fidelity to her distinctive visual aesthetic. Vampire Knight has sold millions of copies worldwide and is considered a key text in the gothic shojo romance tradition.
