Kotaro Isaka was born in 1971 in Chiba Prefecture and worked in various fields before his fiction career began in earnest with his debut novel Ōdishon in 2000. Bullet Train, published in Japan in 2010 as Maria Beetle, is his most internationally successful novel following its 2022 Hollywood adaptation starring Brad Pitt and Sandra Bullock. The novel assembles a group of hitmen and criminals on the same bullet train — a Shinkansen travelling from Tokyo — each with their own agenda and each unaware of how their presence connects to the others.
